i will try to translate the scripted writing soon for the website
My original plan had been to rip this book up page by page and reproduce it
on the website but my ebay bill is so HUGE that I must sell this book
I still plan later to digitize this entire book on the aa history website
I guess some aa collector could buy the book from me
read and study it for a while and then donate it back to me to
use to digitize!!!  I guess I am dreaming

this book is in only FAIR shape see photos.
it appears to have had water damage or dampness in the past
and a few of the pages show kind of a water mark around the ends
however I think its a great example of temperance and good reading copy
for book from 1877 that is over 122 years old
Book Hinges and Spine are good shape. All illustrations still in the book NONE Loose

THIS BOOK IS CERTAINLY RARE AND SCARCE

"A nineteenth-century movement among alcoholics that was, initially, similar to AA in many ways. Over one hundred thousand alcoholics sobered up with the Washingtonians, before the movement self-destructed in the chaos caused by involvement in a myriad of issues unrelated, or only remotely related, to alcoholism. Lacking singleness of purpose, the movement collapsed. The experience of the Washingtonians provides compelling evidence for the importance of AA focusing directly and exclusively on the issue of alcoholism".

The following, rather long, extract describes the Washingtonians and one of their star speakers as they were seen from the perspective of the latter part of the 19th century--years after their decline to little more than a fond memory in the minds of temperance advocates. The extract is from The Temperance Reform and its Great Reformers by Rev. W.H. Daniels, A.M., published 1878.
