"When you
read the "Big Book" you are reading a piece of
Oxford group literature. Just about everything in the book came
from the Oxford Group. Bill just dressed it up for the alcoholics."
James Houck quote from this book page 24 "The
world has yet to see what can be accomplished by, with,
and through one person totally committed to doing the Will of God."
"Will YOU be that Person??"
James Houck quote from this book page 76

James Houck and the Four Page Pamphlet
that is changing the World -One Life at Time
In this book, the author describes his four years with James Houck, a 94 year old
member of the Oxford Group. James is the last living link to the spiritual roots of the
Twelve Step Movement. Since 1996,James Houck and Wally Paton have taken
thousands of people through the Four Steps of Surrender, Sharing, Restitution and
Guidance to free them from the bondage of addiction and self-destructive behavior
by establishing and maintaining a two-way communication with the "God who speaks."
In addition, they have shown over one hundred thousand people how to practice two-way
prayer as described in the simple, four-page pamphlet titled How to Listen to Go
Dedication
This book is dedicated to my mentor, spiritual advisor and
sharing partner James Houck. James attended Oxford Group
meetings from 1935-1937 with Bill Wilson, the New York City
Co-founder of the Twelve Step Movement. James obtained a
copy of How to Listen to God from John Batterson in the late
1930's and has 'incorporated the principles of this four-page
pamphlet into his life-changing work for the past sixty-five
years.
This book is also dedicated to John Batterson the author of
the How to Listen to God pamphlet that has done much to change
the world by bringing people closer to God through the practice
of two-way prayer. John was an Oxford Group pioneer who
attended meetings and house parties in the 1930's with Dr. Bob
and Anne Smith. Dr. Bob is the Akron, Ohio co-founder of the
Twelve Step Movement.
Acknowledgments
I am grateful for the encouragement and support I have
received during the three years it has taken to write this tribute
to James Houck, one of America's greatest life-changers. James
is living proof that the Four Step program of the 1930's worked
then and is continuing to work today.
I am indebted to Bonnie and Ozzie Lepper, the proprietors
of the Wilson House, for providing me the opportunity Io
present the Back to Basics and Converting Barriers to Bridges
programs at weekend spiritual retreats during the past four
years. Much of the material for this book came directly from
those very successful, lifesaving seminars.
I am extending a special thanks to Sue Smith Windows, Dr.
Bob and Anne Smith's daughter for making her mom and dads
archival materials available. This collection provided me with
a great deal of insight into the original Four Step program that
changed so many lives in the 1930's.
I also wish to thank those who helped critique, edit and
pray over this book. Some of them are Neil Britner, Steve
Glagola, John and Susan Hutzler, and Bill Lash. In addition,
Mickie Jones assisted with the production of the final manuscript
and Margaret Allen, along with Susan Sienk, did much of the
typing of the Oxford Group source material.
And Finally I owe a special debt of gratitude to my wife Poe, who assisted with
Back to Basics and Converting Barriers to Bridges Seminars. She also
worked on several of the rewrites and did the final editing of this book.
