Older Member Press, 1964, stated 9th printing May, 1983. 72 pages, soft cover. There is no writing in the book and no torn or missing pages, the binding is tight, the text pages are slightly age-toned, the cover has wear and cracks from opening.

The book is a collection of articles written in the A.A. Grapevine as a series “The Twelve Steps and the Older AA” running from October 1954 through June 1956, by the author J.E. (Jerome Ellison). They were updated and republished in the A.A. Grapevine as “The Twelve Steps Revisited,” from March 1961 through October 1963. Ellison was a writer and editor prior to his introduction to Alcoholics Anonymous. According to his writings, he sobered up in 1947/8. He served as editor of the A.A. Grapevine and was a professor at Indiana University.

Ellsion also wrote the following magazine articles about alcoholism and addiction:

  • “The Drug Addicts Who Cure One Another” Saturday Evening Post, August 1954
  • “Help For The Alcoholic's Family” Saturday Evening Post, July 2, 1955
  • “Psychiatrists on the Assembly Line” Saturday Evening Post, February 11, 1961
  • “Alcoholics Anonymous – Danger of Success” The Nation, March 2, 1964

After having served as a paid consultant evaluating A.A.s publication activities, Ellison was very critical of leadership in Alcoholics Anonymous for its lack of planning. Ellison expressed these concerns in his articles in The Nation. Ellison felt that gossip and racism threatened AAs unity. Ellison pointed directly at A.A.s Board of Trustees as the culprit for allowing this to persist.

This anonymous author wrote a series of articles for the grapevine in the late 1950's and 1960's. He has info on the 24 hour plan and Lincoln speches on alcoholism. Great lines from the intro:

The newest newcomer is just as authentically
an explorer into the infinite as were Bill and
Bob when they founded AA on June 10,1935.
Nobody can take the Tweve Steps for anybody
else. Each individual who sets his foot on
the road suggested by the Steps finds himself
on his own endlessly challenging, sometime
perilous journey into undiscovered territory.

I suggest that you hang on to that book; there
are probably few copies around.

You probably know it was written by Jerome
Ellison, who had a great career as a writer and
editor before alcoholism laid him low. He came
back in sobriety to become a fairly successful
writer again and was, for a short time, editor
of the Grapevine. He was also a professor at
Indiana University for seven years.

I met him once at the Grapevine offices and
also spent an afternoon visiting with him at
his home in Guilford, CT., in early 1964. He
passed away many years ago.
