Doner was an alcoholic. He was born near Chicago. At 14, he enlisted in Co. G, 141st Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. Afterwards, he worked on the Chicago and Northwestern railroad. Lost both his arms by falling under a railroad car. Wrote this story with his teeth. Describes experiences as soldier and also was beaten up and almost hanged by ruffians. A very scarce little book. In good condition except the back wrapper is almost detached from the spine and the blue wrapper is gone from the spine (see pics). There is some sermonizing like AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) but was written over 50 years prior to founding of AA.
