By JOHN B. GOUGH.
WITH A HISTORY OF MR. GOUGH'S LIFE AND WORK,
Superbly illustrated with
Two Hundred and Twenty-Five Engravings from Original Designs by the
Most
Eminent Artists. 1887
A giant
list of illustrations follows this title page. John B. Gough, for those
of you who don't know, was a legendary 19th century English temperance
reformer. In the years leading up until the constitutional amendment
instituting Prohibition, men like Gough were responsible for whipping
the masses into an anti-alcohol and anti-alcoholic frenzy. Great
engravings of men in the throes of demon drink and of Gough being
attacked by surly English youth. Some of the full page illustrations
include one of the Old Brewery at Five Points, New York (the old rough
area of lower Manhattan), one of a woman beating a bear with a broom
(not sure of context, sorry), and one of a satanic looking drunken
fiddler and his satanic looking audience. What a great book. Hours of
perusing enjoyment. A very thick temperance autobiography. Very thick,
639 pages. Bound in red boards with gold lettering and design. Decorated
endpapers.
