In this book the author analyzes small groups that attempt to deal with violence, drug addiction, alcoholism and other modern day problems. There is a 16 page chapter on Alcoholics Anonymous that includes the authors attendance and observation of AA. He outlines the 12 step program and the 12 traditions. He spent much tiem with recovering people to understand the program and does talk about the arguments about AA being a religion.

Also in the book are the author's experiences with:Recovery Inc. (anger), Yokefellows, Seven Steppers, Daytop and Synanon, and Integrity Therapy.
