Historical Resources on Alcohol Use in America

A growing number of organizations and institutions are providing Internet access to their historical materials on alcohol/drug use in America. Below is a selected list of historical resources on the Web, some of which offer full-text documents and digitized images, while others provide access to bibliographic records through library catalogs and online databases. A few of these Websites provide contact and descriptive information (regarding collections and services) only.

Additional Links
These links are particularly helpful in researching further the study of alcohol history in America. Most of the sites are dedicated to the Temperance and Prohibition movements, or the alcohol beverage industry, while others cover more general American history including alcohol topics. Many of the sites include full-text documents and fascinating images.

Alcohol and Temperance History Group
This scholarly association is devoted to the social history of alcohol. It maintains a listserv and a journal for its members. The website includes links to digitized documents, images, and other history sites.
Anti-Saloon League Archives
This site from Westerville Public Library (Ohio) includes digitized archival material from the Anti-Saloon League.

Temperance and Prohibition

Developed by the Ohio State University history department, this site includes essays and political cartoons from the eras, particularly the Ohio Dry Campaign and the Anti-Saloon League.

WCTU Tapestries
A visually attractive site containing images of tapestries sewed by members of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in Canada. It is a reflection of the Museum for Textiles exhibit entitled Gather Beneath the Banner: Political and Religious Banners of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union 1877-1932.
Woman's Christian Temperance Union
The official website of the WCTU. The site links to descriptions of the organization's past and present. The historical information includes its development, major figures, successful 'women's crusades' and portraits.
American Alcohol History
American Beer: Glimpses of Its History and Description of Its Manufacture
This site is a full-text book of the same title. It details the development of brewing in America, including the psychological and legal effects of Temperance and Prohibition. The Alcohol Studies Library owns a print copy of this work in its Rare Book Room.
