ALCOHOL AND SCIENCE OR What It Is And What It Does by William Hargreaves, MD Published by National Temperance Society A very interesting book on the early studies of the effect of alcohol on the human body. It conclude: We have seen that alcohol has its origin in the putrefaction of organic substances; and that in every sense of the term, alcohol is a poison, and not a food in any sense. For instead of nourishing, it poisons; instead of strengthening, it weakens; instead of stimulating it narcotises and paralyses; instead of increasing the vital forces, it diminishes force, produces diseases, and is an agent of degeneration and death. Published by the National Temperance Society and Publication House, 1886, copyright 1882, not additional printings indicated.
